Week 5

Tuesday 26th of May

My goals/to do list for this week

  • Maquette of the lobster with functioning legs and tail mechanisms

  • Maquette of the woodlouse

  • Maquette of the Butterfly, try with silk paper wings and less support

  • Technical and Design drawings for Woodlouse and Lobster

  • Film an Edit Butterfly outside to see how it works

Today was a good productive day. I started the day of by making a plan for the week coming as there is a deadline on Friday for out sketchbooks and finalized designs to be able to move forward.

I started with the lobster. Last week I had worked out a possible leg mechanism, but It was only possible for one pair. I have many challenges to come for this puppet. Dik, during our tutorial seemed to say it was quite a challenge. So far I have figured out a potential leg and tail mechanism. But of course, I need to try those out in maquette form to see if they could work. I want to be able to use and puppeteer this lobster from above with two puppeteers (as shown in the drawing in the top right corner).

Still a lot of questions on this one. How to mechanism the legs so that I get a smooth movement, how can I have a pinching movement of the claw from above, and how is the head attached to the body if it needs to move ? I am very excited to really delve into this puppet. As the other puppets are going to be easier to make, I am very happy about really focusing on this lobster in terms of mechanisms, but also in color and texture.

Secondly, I worked on the woodlouse.

I have already made a pretty sturdy paper maquette of this one, but wanted to play around with materials a bit more. I realized that instead of shaping my woodlouse, I could use material that already existed, such as a plastic bottle. Cut in half and in little pieces, a plastic bottle is perfect for the woodlouse. I have decided that it will distance itself a little bit from the naturalism, and that I do not want to hide completely the bottle shape and texture. Talking about texture, it adds a lot of it, as it is quite glossy. The woodlouse itself is sometimes transparents and glossy and this works quite well. I worked on the drawings then made a little maquette to see if a plastic milk bottle could work. the picture is not that good as it is transparent material, but I used the exact same technique as the paper maquette I had made a few weeks ago. And I am happy with the results.

During our meeting with the group, we mainly discussed notes from the weekend about the movie and technical things, such as green screens and clips ets.

A good start of the week.
