The body

Wednesday the 13th of May

After focussing on legs and wings, I decided to focus on the body. Most arthropods have an exoskeleton, and in fact, I believe that's one of their main characteristics as animals. They often also have segmented bodies, either in three parts, or in many different parts like the Pill bug or the centipede.

Today I got interested by the Pill Bug. A strange little creepy crawly, quite innocent and dull looking, but has an interesting body, as it can roll on itself.

I started by looking at its colors, then its movement and his legs. I first attempted to create a body using beer bottle caps, but it was proving not to be the right shape. Then mimicking the shape of the the lobster tail I made . After our talk with the group, Louis showed me a few new mechanisms that I could use and started to work on that.

I first started with a mechanism that didn't really work for the pill bug, but I think would work for a caterpillar as I added an elastic underneath and it can come back and forth quite nicely. Here is a video of the mechanism. Of course I would re-make it longer as right now you can't really see the movement.

The first attempt of the movement of the body using sticks to move and wiggle around. I was quite happy with the fact that it could actually roll.

I then decided to add color to create more of a character. It was easier to use a more square shapes for now, but ideally would cut out more rounded shape to ressemble the insect more.

Final movement of the the Pill bug.

Later in the day we had a lecture with Rachel Canning which was very interesting.

She made me realize that from now on I should draw the puppeteer in my sketches.

A good day!
