Monday 11th of May
This week we continue our journey in the experimental aspect of mechanisms and ideas. After last weeks little creations and discussions with the group, I am inspired to search outside the box for mechanisms using not only strings but also our hands and our bodies.
During our tutorial last friday, Dik mentioned to put a handle on the paper lobster I had made, and to start thinking about how these puppets are operated. I started the day researching all types of mechanisms for any sorts of puppets. And got a few ideas for a centipede for example using my whole arm, or a crab, using two fingers for the claws and the other for the legs ?
I researched a lot of imagery of mechanisms, and watched a few videos to give myself inspiration.
After Lucy's tutorial, I started to work on a mechanism that I could attach on my hands and move with my fingers. I think it would work for a centipede or a spider, even if it would not be totally anatomically correct. But I wanted to give it a go using cardboard, straws and thread.
I was quite happy with the result, even though right now it does not look like any animal. I will continue to build on it tomorrow, and see how far it can go, and if it is worth to make it in a better way.
During the day I was thinking more and more of other sorts of arthropods, and different styles of puppets, and got very motivated by butterflies. Therefore I ended up researching them a lot, and how they move and as a flock. I found a ring mechanism that really fascinated me, and now I want to try and copy it. Even though it is probably way harder than it looks.
I want to explore the idea of a flock of insects. Why not concentrate on butterflies. I will also finish my weird hand puppet.
